At least 10 people were killed and nearly 100 others injured after a Russian ballistic missile struck a defence industry event in Ukraine's Kyiv region on Friday, Ukrainian authorities said.
Emergency response teams completed rescue operations after the attack, which targeted a venue hosting representatives of Ukraine's defence sector. Images released by emergency services showed rescue workers searching through collapsed structures and debris near residential homes.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the missile strike, calling it another act of Russian aggression. At the same time, he criticised the decision to organise a large defence-related event close to residential areas during an ongoing war, saying such gatherings should not take place under current security conditions.
The event, organised by a Ukrainian drone manufacturers' association, was reportedly being held at a training facility located just outside Kyiv. Ukraine's military said the venue was not under its direct control but stressed that any similar event should be conducted with the highest level of security.
Ukraine's Council of Defence Industry confirmed that members of the country's defence sector were present at the site but said it was not responsible for organising the exhibition.
Following the attack, Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko announced the opening of a criminal investigation into whether officials failed to ensure adequate safety measures during the planning and conduct of the event.
Elsewhere in eastern Ukraine, Russian aerial strikes on the city of Sloviansk killed five people and injured several others. A second attack later in the day caused additional injuries and damaged residential buildings, according to regional officials.
The latest strikes underscore the continuing intensity of the conflict, with missile and drone attacks continuing to affect both military-linked sites and civilian areas across Ukraine.
